Out of Africa

The trip to Africa began with a flight (as many trips do). While thinking about all that lay ahead, I watched the sunrise from the window of the plane. From up there it was a bit surreal, just colors mostly: a beautiful beginning to this leg of my journey.

During the months I spent traveling in Africa, I saw so many beautiful and unforgettable places – many of which I have already shared. But I have also met some beautiful and amazing people – Africans and others just traveling through. As I prepare to leave Africa, I enjoyed looking back at my pictures of people who made my trip special – I’d like to share just a few.

People at work:

Golden, Making Flowers from Tin Cans in a Township in Cape Town

Three Members of the South African Navy

Zulu Rickshaw Driver

Okavango Delta Pilot

Shepherd in Lesotho

Porters on Kilimanjaro

And people working me. . .nothing like some roadside gambling!

People at play:

I met so many children. . .often asking me to take their picture:

I saw these two cuties on recess in their schoolyard -- they touched my heart:

Some of my fellow travelers who left me with great memories!

My Fellow Volunteers in Malawi
A few special people opened up their homes to me – people who I am proud to call friends.

(I have to also give a shout-out to Brad & Bev, an amazing South African couple that I met in Lesotho and spent a few days with. Somehow, even after spending the night at their home and meeting their kids, I managed to not take a single picture -- very unlike me! But many thanks to them and their family for opening their home!)

November 2012 Update: Luckily, Brad sent a family photo to make my blog complete. .

Africa is a huge continent -- there is so much I haven’t seen, so many places I haven’t explored. But I must continuously remind myself that I can’t see it all! The world is so big. It’s time for me to move on.

My Last Stop in Africa – the Lilongwe Airport
As I flew out of Africa and thought about my months there, I watched the moon rise from the window of the plane. It seemed like a fitting ending to this chapter of my journey.
