Traveling Light

A lot of people asked me how one goes about packing for a trip of indefinite length to a variety of climates. I can say that it’s not easy – especially for someone who likes options. But, all of the books and articles written by those who have done this before say the same thing: pack light! Lay out everything you think you need and then put half back. Pack less than you think you need for a week and plan to wash clothes often.

In the end, it wasn’t easy committing to only 2 pair of pants, one sweater, one pair of flip-flops, etc. But, I managed to put together everything (hopefully) I need and kept it to a 38 pound pack that I’ll be carrying everywhere I go. While that may sound heavy, I was proud of my work. I even have an empty pocket in my backpack!

However, after all that stress and effort, it seems I’m taking traveling light to a whole new level. I arrived in Santiago, Chile (after changing planes in both Miami and Lima, Peru) to find that they have no idea where my bag might be -- but it’s certainly not in Santiago, Chile with me. So, apparently, at least for awhile, I’ve packed only what I would normally wear in a day (and I’ve already been wearing it for over 24 hours straight). Seems I’ll be washing clothes very often!

The good news is that I have nowhere to be and no one to look presentable for. And the adventure begins. . .

  1. Well hopefully you have been able to find your bag. Also I hope you had a good new year. I was just working and decided to stop to see what adventure you might be having. Let us know how Chile is treating you.
